An exhibition celebrating the music, culture and lasting influence of disco.
On 9 October 2026, International Disco Day™ attended the official opening of DISCO, a major exhibition at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Representing the initiative were Robert Ravenšćak, Founder of International Disco Day™, and Viktor, Project Manager. The exhibition was originally conceived by the Musée de la Musique – Philharmonie de Paris and curated by Jean-Yves Leloup and Marion Challier. For its Amsterdam presentation, Wereldmuseum has expanded the exhibition with a special focus on Dutch disco culture.
A Cultural Movement That Changed the World
Spread across 835 square metres, DISCO explores the remarkable journey of a musical movement that emerged from the underground clubs of New York and went on to influence generations around the world. Through original recordings, photographs, artwork, fashion, musical instruments and interactive installations, the exhibition brings disco’s history to life. Visitors discover the creativity behind its distinctive sound, the development of DJ culture and the role disco played in shaping contemporary dance music. The exhibition also highlights disco’s social significance, particularly its connections with freedom, inclusion, equality and self-expression.
A Meaningful Visit for International Disco Day™
For International Disco Day™, the opening was a valuable opportunity to experience how one of Europe’s major cultural institutions presents disco’s heritage to an international audience. During the visit, we also had the pleasure of meeting Jean-Yves Leloup, one of the exhibition’s curators. The experience reinforced the importance of preserving disco’s history and sharing its musical and cultural legacy with new generations. International Disco Day™ congratulates Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, Philharmonie de Paris and everyone involved in bringing this remarkable exhibition to life.
